Robotic Urologic Surgery

Robotic surgery, a robot-assisted laparoscopic surgery, is the current standard approach to perform minimally invasive cancer surgery. From the day DaVinci robot was introduced in the early part of this century, most of the Uro-oncological procedures concerning the kidney, prostate and the bladder is performed using the Robot.

Robotic surgery is based on the master-slave technology where a surgeon is a master and the Robot being the slave. The Robot replicates all the movements of a surgeon during the surgery with precision. For prostate cancer, robotic-assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomy is the standard of care, while nephron-sparing surgery (also called partial nephrectomy) is the standard of care for renal cancer.

The benefits of Robot include enhanced 3-D vision, better access to the pelvis and ease of maneuverability in the pelvis, less blood loss, superior suturing ability and better ability to preserve neurovascular bundles. This translates into superior clinical outcomes for the patient in the form of considerably less pain, improved urinary continence rates leading to faster recovery and enhanced patient experience.
