Department of Anatomical Pathology and Cytology

handles all specimens received for histologic and cytologic studies and the special tests pertaining to these two specialities. This department with the other departments of the Laboratory Services is also recognized for the Diplomate of the National Board of Examinations (Dip NB) in Pathology and for the government recognized Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology (DMLT).

Investigations

Routine histopathologic study, with reports being available in 2 to 5 days, depending on the sample. Cytologic studies including exfoliative, fluid, fine needle aspiration and guided cytology. Reports are available within 12-24 hrs. of receiving the specimen.

Immunohistochemistry (IHC)

A battery of antibodies available for over 40 immune stains for exact tumour typing, and this can be done on formalin fixed paraffin embedded sections. Oestrogen and Progesterone receptor (ER and PR) and HER2 receptor protein assay are also done using IHC method.
Frozen sections are routinely done on all working days for surgical samples requiring an immediate intra-operative diagnosis

Immunofluorescence (IF). Direct immunofluorescence study using a panel of antibodies, done for renal and skin biopsies.
