World Asthma Day
Asthma is a common problem and is increasing in areas with air pollution. Patients sometimes have wheezing as a symptom. Wheezing is a whistle like sound that occurs when a person with asthma breathes. Many people with asthma only have some chest tightness or a cough as the problem. Sometimes they get short of breath and have difficulty with exercise. Some asthma sufferers have seasonal worsening if the air is too humid. Allergy to pollen, house dust and specific other items like certain foods can trigger asthma. Acid reflux is also a known cause. Cigarette smoke is a big problem for asthmatics. The good news is that asthma can be completely controlled in most patients. The air tubes are in spasm during an attack and taking inhaled medicine or certain oral medications can relax them. The other big cause of the asthma symptom is inflammation in the lining of the air tubes. This leads to swelling of the bronchial mucus membrane and narrows the tube. This is also treated with special inhaled medicines and some patients need stronger oral medicines like steroids. Fortunately most patients with asthma whether their cause is genetic, allergy triggered, occupational or even from exercise, can live completely normal lives with the right management plan. Educating oneself on the triggers and avoiding them along with a regular interaction with the health care provider will keep asthma in control.
