Tips for Cancer Survivors

The Importance of Diet for Cancer Maintaining a healthy diet is important for patients undergoing cancer therapy.
Tips for Patients:The following tips are essential for all cancer patients experiencing side effects during or post cancer treatment.Weight Loss:

  • Consume small portions of food at regular intervals
  • Increase the frequency of meals throughout the day
  • Increase the intake of protein and calorie rich supplements
  • Store nutrient rich foods all time at home, and snack frequently

Nausea or Vomiting:

  • Take six smaller meals instead of three large meals in a day
  • Avoid drinking liquids during meals, rather drink half or one hour before meals
  • Consume dry or salty foods
  • Avoid greasy, spicy or sweetened food items

Constipation:

  • Increase the intake of fluids (8 cups per day)
  • Incorporate light physical exercise into your daily regime
  • Eat foods high in fiber and bulk

Diarrhea:

  • Drink ample of clear liquids throughout the day
  • Include food items that are easy to digest
  • Avoid foods high in fiber
  • Avoid consumption of foods that cause gas

Sore Throat or Sore Mouth:

  • Avoid dry, rough foods and consume soft and moist foods
  • Avoid consumption of alcohol and highly acidic foods

Fatigue:

  • Keep nutrient rich foods on hand and snack frequently
  • Drink plenty of fluids throughout the day
  • Increase physical activity in your regime

Dry Mouth:

  • Add sauces and gravies with your food and chew on hard, sugarless candies or gum
  • Douse or dip food in beverages, such as coffee or milk before eating
  • Take a sip of beverage with each bite of food

Mouth Blindness:

  • Consume strong flavored foods
  • Maintain texture in meals: crisp lettuce and fruits, soft bread, crunchy toast
  • Try to include spicy foods in your meals

Appetite Loss:

  • Eat small portions of meals and don’t drink with meals, rather drink before meals
  • Increase intake of liquids
  • Eat foods rich in nutrients
  • Be active and include light physical exercise in your regime

Maintain a good diet during or post treatment to cope with side-effects and keep the doctor informed of diet related problems.
