ROBOTICS IN UROLOGY

ROBOTICS IN UROLOGY

Da Vinci surgical robot was installed In Apollo Hospitals Hyderabad in September 2012. We have started performing Robotic Urological Surgeries since Jan 2013.

Robotic surgery is the research child of Intuitive Surgicals, USA. Where it has been designed in a way that a robot reciprocates whatever the surgeon performs. Basically Robot is a slave controlled by master-surgeon.

Whatever movements are made by the surgeon sitting at the console is reciprocated by robot on the patient.

Robot consists of 3 parts – Surgeon console, Patient cart and monitor. After placing trocar as in laparoscopic surgery the robotic arms are connected to the patient.  It is called Docking of the instruments. Once that is done, then the further surgery is continued by the surgeon.

Unlike laparoscopic surgery, Robotic surgery has distinct advantages viz

  • Stereoscopic 3D vision
  • Intutive movements
  •  Two 3-chip cameras
  •  Robotic wrist
  •  7 degrees of freedom
  •  Tremor filtering
  •  Movement scaling (2:1 to 5:1)
  •  Reduced fatigue
  •  Ergonomic position

The most commonly performed urological surgeries in our hospital are

  • Radical prostatectomy
  • Radical nephrectomy
  • Partial nephrectomy
  • Pyeloplasty
  • Adrenelectomy

Robotic surgery is indeed a boon for the surgeon and the patient in-terms of surgeon comfort, intuitive movements, better visualization, facilitating good precise dissection and resulting in favourable outcome.
